Arsenal striker Thomas Higuain has been ruled out for three rounds of training after sustaining a knee ligament injury during his previous game against Manchester United on Sunday.
Higuain's injury is believed to be the result of a high-impact tackle he received in the first half, which led to a knock to his knee and a subsequent scan that revealed a torn meniscus.
The Frenchman had previously suffered from knee ligament injuries in the past but this time it appears to have caused more damage than anticipated.
"It's unfortunate for Arsenal," manager Arsene Wenger said. "Thomas has been playing well all season so we're very disappointed with the outcome."
It's unclear at this stage how long Higuain will be out for, but it's likely to be a long period of recovery before he can return to full fitness.
"The team is looking forward to seeing him back on the pitch soon," said Wenger. "He's a great player who deserves to be back playing."
While the absence of Higuain could mean a loss for Arsenal's attacking options, there is still plenty of talent available up front.
Neymar Jr and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have both impressed in recent weeks, while also having played in the midfield role for the club.
"We need to make sure everyone gets the right rest and recovery," said Wenger. "We want to see them back on the pitch as soon as possible."
As for Higuain himself, he was already facing some challenges ahead of his return. He missed the Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain last month because of a hamstring injury sustained in training earlier in the week.
But despite the setback, he remains confident in his ability to recover quickly and play at his best again. "I'm feeling good and I'm ready to go," he said. "I'll just focus on getting better and coming back stronger."
