The French football season has begun in style as Lyon and Brest both started their campaigns with a draw.

In what was a closely contested match at Stade de Gerland, Lyon came out on top with a 2-1 win over Brest. The hosts were the first to strike, with Anthony Martial scoring in the eighth minute after good work from Memphis Depay.

Brest, however, were not to be beaten as they equalized through Yannick Carrasco in the 48th minute. It was a tough game for both sides but it was Lyon who held on to take all three points.

Meanwhile, Brest's new coach, Romain Vincelot, will be hoping that his side can build on this result and start to turn things around.

Elsewhere, there was disappointment for Paris Saint-Germain as they were held to a goalless draw by Montpellier. The home side dominated much of the game but could only manage one shot on target.

On the other hand, Marseille had a more comfortable day as they beat Nice 2-0 thanks to goals from Dimitri Payet and Loic Rémy. This victory puts Marseille top of Group C.

Overall, it was another exciting opening weekend for French football fans, with plenty of drama and excitement to look forward to throughout the season.
